Rocky III: The Ultimate Challenge
Rocky III is a 1982 American sports drama film written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone as the title character, with Carl Weathers as former boxing champion Apollo Creed, Burgess Meredith as Rocky's trainer Mickey, and Talia Shire as Rocky's wife, Adrian. It also features Mr. T as the powerful new contender Clubber Lang, and Hulk Hogan as the wrestling champion Thunderlips. The film is the sequel to Rocky II (1979) and the third installment in the Rocky film series.
Plot Summary
In 1981, five years after winning the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa has had a string of ten successful title defenses and his fame, wealth, and celebrity profile have increased. Rocky's manager, Mickey Goldmill, worriedly eyes a young and powerful contender rapidly rising through the ranks, James "Clubber" Lang. While unveiling a statue of himself at the stairway by the Philadelphia Museum of Art just prior to announcing his retirement, Rocky is publicly challenged by Lang, now the number-one contender. Lang accuses Rocky of intentionally accepting challenges from lesser opponents and goads Rocky into accepting his fight for the title.

During a press conference regarding the match, Lang pushes Mickey aside and assaults Rocky. Mickey suffers a heart attack and is hospitalized. Rocky visits him and asks him to be in his corner for one last fight. Mickey reluctantly agrees, but makes Rocky promise to win. However, Lang dominates the fight and knocks out Rocky in the second round, becoming the new champion. Mickey dies shortly after the fight, leaving Rocky distraught and guilt-ridden.
Rocky is approached by Apollo Creed, who offers to train him for a rematch with Lang. Rocky agrees and moves to Los Angeles with Adrian and Paulie to train at Apollo's gym. There, he meets Apollo's trainer Duke and spars with Apollo himself. Rocky struggles to adapt to Apollo's style of fighting, which relies on speed and agility rather than brute force. He also has trouble regaining his confidence and motivation after losing Mickey and the title.
Adrian confronts Rocky on the beach and tells him that he is afraid of losing everything he has worked for. She encourages him to face his fears and fight for himself, not for Mickey or anyone else. Rocky embraces her and regains his determination. He trains harder with Apollo and Duke, improving his skills and endurance. He also develops a friendship with Apollo based on mutual respect.
The rematch takes place at Madison Square Garden. Rocky surprises Lang with his speed and agility, dodging his punches and landing his own. He taunts Lang and frustrates him into losing his temper. In the third round, Rocky unleashes a barrage of blows that knocks out Lang and reclaims the title.
In a private gym, Rocky and Apollo have a friendly sparring match to settle their old rivalry once and for all. They exchange punches as the screen freezes and fades to black.

Rocky III received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its action sequences and music but criticism for its screenplay, with some critics deeming the film unnecessary. Retrospective reviews have been more positive and the movie gained a strong cult following . Rocky III grossed $270 million worldwide, surpassing its predecessors to become the then-highest grossing film in the franchise, and the fourth highest grossing film at the domestic box office and the second highest grossing film of 1982 worldwide. Its theme song, "Eye of the Tiger", became a hit single and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. The sequel, Rocky IV, was released in 1985.
